It is never too late to learn. Learning challenges and needs during the adult stage

Jaume Bofill Fudation

Challenge

Adults learning is a strategic stage for the improvement of the educational level of the population, for the reduction of social inequalities and in the development of society. In the countries where there has been a strong commitment to promote learning during the adult stage, or Lifelong Learning (LLL), it has been seen how employability increases and the quality of life of the most vulnerable groups increases, socially and economically. In addition, UNESCO emphasizes that the LLL provides social cohesion, stimulates new associations between people and groups and promotes the cultural development of the entire community. Despite the importance of this type of learning, in our context it is still a very precarious sector, to which very few resources are allocated, and it arouses little interest both on the part of the institutions and on the part of the citizenship.

Answer

On behalf of the Jaume Bofill Foundation, a study was carried out to know the reality of the adult learning in Catalonia and to detect the main needs and challenges. The study included both the official adult learning centers and Third Sector entities that also provide this type of learning. Based on this state of the art, a proposal was made to develop a new model of Lifelong Learning in Catalonia, deployed in 6 strategic axes: Definition, governance and relationship with the community, orientation and accompaniment, adaptation of the LLL to vital processes, quality and recognition, visibility and diffusion and review of the evaluation system.
