Comparative analysis of the positions on the right to vote at age 16

Fundació Triangle Jove, a space and collaboration platform for the National Youth Council of Catalonia, the Valencian Youth Council and the Youth Council of the Balearic Islands, wants to know the favorable and unfavorable arguments regarding the lowering the voting age to 16 years.

What are the favorable and unfavorable academic positions in relation to suffrage from the age of 16? What is the reality of other countries and / or regions in which the right to vote can be exercised from the age of 16? What are the positions of international bodies and other institutions in relation to suffrage from the age of 16?

Answer

A documentary review of bibliographic sources and other publications of interest is elaborated centered in the debate of what is the age from which it would be advisable to consider to the people like political subjects of right, and therefore with capacity to exert the right to vote. This documentary review is organized into three main sections:

  1. Comparative analysis of the different expert and academic positions in relation to suffrage from the age of 16: The arguments and reasoning present among the academic community in relation to suffrage from the age of 16 are analyzed.
  2. Reality of other countries and regions where the right to vote can be exercised from the age of 16 and the consequences that derive from it: The different realities of countries and regions around the world are exposed.
  3. Collection of the different visions and positions of different international bodies and institutions on suffrage from the age of 16: List of international entities in favor of implementing the right to vote at the age of 16, views of the councils of youth of Catalonia and positioning of the political parties of the Spanish state.
